I LOVE the Fall! It is my favorite season of the year. It is a time when the weather is cool, the air is crisp and the food is all about comfort!
However, as I journey on my path towards becoming Skinnythick, I realize that I will have some challenges ahead of me over the holidays! By associating this time with food, I naturally think about all of the good and fattening food that I would like to enjoy. Coupled with a slower pace of living (fewer outdoor activities), it will be a challenge to stay on the path to weight loss.
So, what are some strategies that I can use in order to survive this period of time?
First, I’m not going to deprive myself of enjoying life! Knowing that there is a challenge and preparing for it is the first step to surviving this season. In addition, I have to remember to eat healthy foods and maintain the healthy lifestyle.
One strategy that I will use this season is to remember to hydrate. Thirst and dehydration sometimes mask themselves as hunger. If we remember to get our water in this season, it will help to diminish our hunger urges and help us to survive this season of good food. Remember to drink your water, include fall favorites such as a warm cup of hot (green) tea in your routine. This will help you to get your liquids in during this season.
The second strategy that I think will work is to plan for your festivities! Go to your parties with family, friends and co-workers with confidence. Do not be afraid of going off on your healthy eating program because we are trying to make this a LIFESTYLE change. Just plan for it. For example, before an event, you can have a small dinner, such as a light salad and soup. That will take away your hunger and make you less likely to overindulge on foods at your event. Instead of a cocktail with lots of calories, try a wine spritzer or even a soft drink with a lime wedge. Remember, the point of the party is to be with friends and family, not to get sloppy drunk. Enjoy them and do it guilt free!
Another strategy is to revisit your comfort foods and recreate the recipes using lower calorie options. Substitute cauliflower rice for regular rice. Replace creams in your vegetable dishes for roasted vegetables. Also, if you really need to indulge, enjoy these foods in moderation. Try to maintain your weight during the holidays and pick up the weight loss efforts after the holiday.
The secret is to have a plan with an eye towards a healthy lifestyle and work that plan until it becomes natural…
