The Skinnythick Six: 6 Reasons to Drink Water

Drinking water is a key component in successful weight loss. Although I love to drink water, people complain about it being a chore or that they don’t enjoy the “flavor” of water. I really urge one and all to embrace water and make it a central part of your health routine. Whether you are trying to lose weight or not, water is vital to our survival! Also, remember, if you must, that there are things that you can do to enhance your water intake. Add lemon and mint to your water. Try simmering it with ginger and lemon (let it cool first). In addition to the list below, check out my Pinterest post on the topic!

Here are SKINNYTHICKSIX for DRINKING WATER!

1. Drinking Water Can Help in Weight Loss!

Studies have shown that drinking water can help to raise your metabolism and improve the rate at which you burn fat! If you drink water before a meal, it can aid in digestion and help you to feel more satisfied although you may eat less food. If you feel hungry, drink a glass of water, sometimes that satisfies your hunger pains, but if it doesn’t it will help to curb your appetite when you DO eat. Also, stress can sometime disguise itself as hunger. Drinking water helps to address hunger pain brought on by stress.

2. Workout Help for Your Muscles

Working out can cause your muscles to lose water. When you exercise you need water to hydrate your body. Sports drinks are full of preservatives, high in sodium, contain artificial sweeteners and artificial colors. These are not necessary for your body or help your body to hydrate. In addition, water helps to regulate the temperature of your body. As you work out, water helps to hydrate your skin (through sweat) and helps you to regulate your temperature as you work out. It’s a fact – water helps your body to recover from the challenges of a vigorous workout!

3. Water Flushes Toxins from Your System

Not only does water aid in your digestion (and it makes you poop!), it helps to flush the toxins out of your system. This helps to prevent the buildup of minerals which can turn into kidney stones and it promotes normal kidney functioning! Water is a natural “detox” for your body!

4. Water Can Improve Your Skin and Complexion

Drinking water can help to clear up your skin. Certain toxins in our bodies can cause clog skin pores and result in acne. Water helps to flush these toxins and can reduce the risk of pimples and clogged pores. No clogged pores? Glowing skin!

5. Water Fights Bad Breath!

Bad breath is caused by bacteria that is lodged in the grooves of your teeth, gums and tongue. The buildup of this bacteria causes bad breath. When your mouth is dry, you cannot rinse this bacteria from your mouth. Drinking water helps to flush this bacteria and keeps you from developing a buildup of the bacteria in your mouth. So drink lots of water and keep your breath fresh!

6. Finally – Remember Water When You Party!

When you party, you might choose to have a cocktail. If you over indulge, please know that alcohol promotes the production of urine and causes excess fluid loss in your body. Hangovers are caused, in part, by the dehydrating effect that excess alcohol has on your body. To lessen the chance of having a hangover when you drink alcohol, drink water during the evening, alternating between alcohol and water throughout. Before you go to bed, have a large glass of water. This has the effect of helping to flush the alcohol from your body and re-hydrate your body to help to avoid a hangover. However, if you DO wake up with a hangover, try cucumber lemon water to help you feel less bloated or mango ginger water to settle your stomach. (You can also try good old fashioned ginger ale with extra ice chips!)
